Shoulder ultrasound scans in west wales

Ultrasound scan of the shoulder in Tenby to diagnose rotator cuff and shoulder injuries.

Fast, accurate diagnosis for shoulder pain in Pembrokeshire and West Wales

Shoulder pain that won’t settle?

Struggling with a shoulder injury, long-term pain, stiffness, weakness, or a feeling of instability can be frustrating - especially when symptoms persist despite rest or treatment. In some cases, a physical examination alone doesn’t fully explain what’s really going on. Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound allows us to look directly at the shoulder structures in real time, helping to identify the underlying cause of pain and guide the most appropriate next steps.

What’s included in your shoulder ultrasound scan:

  • Performed by a qualified musculoskeletal sonographer (PgC in Medical Ultrasound)
  • Hospital-grade imaging system (Samsung RS80A)
  • Full report usually within 48-hours
  • No referral needed (referrals are also accepted)
  • Includes clinical consultation and explanation of findings
  • Safe, comfortable & free from ionizing radiation

Book your scan today - appointments usually available within days.

Why have a shoulder ultrasound scan?

Shoulder pain is extremely common and can result from many different causes, including tendon irritation, bursitis, inflammation, impingement, soft-tissue tears and more. Ultrasound provides dynamic, real-time imaging that allows us to observe the shoulder as you move, helping us pinpoint the exact source of your symptoms and make the right treatment decisions from the outset of care. Diagnostic Ultrasound provides clarity and often answers to what's really going on in your shoulder.

If you’re experiencing pain when lifting your arm, reduced range of motion, weakness, night-time shoulder pain, or discomfort after a sports injury or similar trauma, a diagnostic ultrasound scan can provide fast, clear answers and help set you on the right path to recovery.

Common reasons for a shoulder scan include -

  • Rotator cuff tear or tendinopathy
  • Shoulder impingement
  • Bursitis
  • Biceps tendon pain or dislocation
  • Post-injury pain or weakness
  • Calcific tendinitis
  • Joint swelling or suspected inflammatory arthritis
  • Acromioclavicular joint sprain
  • Post-surgical follow-up or monitoring

What to expect during your appointment

You can book directly - no referral is needed.  If you self-refer, we’ll start with a new patient consultation to confirm ultrasound is suitable for your condition.

Your appointment includes:

  • Clinical history and safety screening
  • High-resolution diagnostic ultrasound scan of the shoulder
  • Full written report, typically within 48 working hours
  • Advice on next steps and referral options if required

Ultrasound is safe, comfortable, and radiation-free, making it suitable for most people, including those unable to have MRI.

Why choose us?

  • Short waiting times
  • Talk directly to a specialist before, during, and after your scan
  • GCC registered clinician
  • Experienced musculoskeletal sonographer with PgC in Medical Ultrasound
  • Clinical report typically within 48-working hours
  • Serving Tenby, Pembrokeshire and all of West Wales

We combine clear diagnosis with clinical guidance - so you know exactly what to do next.

What Ultrasound Cannot Assess

Ultrasound is excellent for assessing soft tissues, but it cannot:

  • See inside bone or assess bone marrow changes
  • Directly visualise cartilage or labral tears within the shoulder joint
  • Assess deep joint or labral injuries. These may require MRI instead

If we believe another test (such as MRI or X-ray) would be more appropriate, we’ll clearly explain, advise you and refer you to external private partners.
