Why have an ankle & foot ultrasound scan?
The ankle and foot contain many structures that can be injured during walking, running, sport, or everyday activities. Ultrasound can detect tendon tears, ligament sprains, inflammation, scar tissue, nerve irritation, joint swelling, plantar fascia issues and more - all with real-time imaging while you move.

What ultrasound cannot assess
Ultrasound is excellent for soft tissues, but it cannot:
- Assess inside bone or fully diagnose stress fractures (although it can detect stress fractures)
- Fully visualise cartilage deep within joints
- Replace MRI for complex midfoot injuries
- Diagnose deeper joint conditions
- Assess bone marrow changes
