Why have an elbow or arm ultrasound scan?

Elbow pain is extremely common and can result from tendon irritation (tennis or golfer’s elbow), bursitis or inflammation, ligament or tendon injuries, joint swelling or weakness or post-surgical monitoring. Ultrasound scanning provides accurate diagnostic information which physical examination alone sometimes cannot achieve. This added information allows us to make the right treatment decisions from the outset of care.

If you have pain when gripping, lifting, or bending your elbow, stiffness, or swelling, a diagnostic ultrasound scan can give you quick, clear answers and guide the right next steps.

Common reasons for an elbow scan

  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
  • Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis)
  • Biceps or triceps tendon injury
  • Ligament strain or partial tear
  • Olecranon bursitis
  • Ulnar, median or radial nerve entrapment
  • Post-injury pain or weakness
  • Joint effusion or suspected inflammatory arthritis
  • Post-surgical follow-up or monitoring

What to expect during your appointment

You can book directly - no  referral required. If you self-refer, we will start with a new patient consultation to ensure ultrasound is appropriate for your condition.

Your appointment includes:

  • Clinical history & safety screening
  • High-resolution diagnostic ultrasound scan of the elbow
  • Real-time explanation of findings
  • Full written report typically within 48 working hours
  • Guidance on next steps, treatment, or referral if required

Ultrasound is safe, comfortable, and radiation-free, suitable for most patients, including those who cannot have MRI.

What Ultrasound Cannot Assess

Ultrasound is excellent for assessing soft tissues, but it cannot:

  • See inside bone or assess bone marrow changes
  • Directly visualise cartilage or deep joint surfaces
  • Fully assess deep joint or ligament injuries in some joints (MRI may be required)

If another test (MRI or X-ray) is more appropriate, we’ll advise clearly and refer you to trusted partners.
