Focused Shockwave Therapy (F-ESWT) is a modern, non-invasive treatment used to support healing in chronically irritated or injured tendon and soft-tissue structures. It is commonly used in private practice and within some NHS musculoskeletal services for selected conditions that have not responded fully to rest, exercise, manual therapy, or standard rehabilitation.
At Tenby Chiropractic, we combine focused shockwave therapy with diagnostic ultrasound imaging and rehabilitation exercise. This allows us to deliver a comprehensive tendon and soft-tissue care pathway — from accurate diagnosis, to targeted treatment, to long-term management — all under one roof.
How Focused Shockwave Therapy Works
Not all shockwave technologies are the same.
The most commonly available form of shockwave therapy is radial shockwave, which disperses energy broadly through superficial tissues. Focused shockwave, by contrast, allows energy to be concentrated at a specific depth, enabling more precise targeting of deeper or harder-to-reach structures.
Focused shockwave uses high-energy sound waves to create mechanical and biological effects within tissue that may help support the body’s natural repair processes.
These effects may include:
Focused shockwave is often considered where healing appears to have plateaued, particularly in longer-standing conditions.

Focused shockwave therapy is most commonly used for chronic tendon-related conditions, where the tissue has become irritated, overloaded, or degenerative over time.
Conditions commonly assessed for suitability include:
Suitability is always assessed on an individual basis.

We are the only clinic in West Wales able to combine:
This integrated approach allows us to confirm which structure is involved, decide whether shockwave is appropriate, apply treatment accurately, and support recovery with the right rehabilitation plan.
A focused shockwave appointment typically lasts around 15 minutes and includes a brief reassessment followed by treatment delivery. You will be positioned comfortably, and gel is applied to optimise energy transfer.
Many people are offered a short course of treatment, often around 3–4 sessions, depending on the condition and response. Some patients notice improvement during the early stages of care, while others experience more gradual change over time.
We only recommend shockwave therapy when it is clinically appropriate. If it is not the right option for you, we will always discuss suitable alternatives.
